Playing a Lady in LARP

Posted by KTjia On March - 30 - 2009

If you are role playing a character that is designed to be a lady then you should take into consideration the difference between a Lady and what ‘being a lady’ means by today’s standards.

In medieval times a Lady was the term for a noble woman in contrast to a Lord. It was a title associated to elegance, respect and station. In today’s tongue ‘being a lady’ is more or less being ‘lady-like’ in that you are acting with elegance, dignity and respect for yourself and others – the same as a noble woman would.

No matter the timeline of your game setting you may choose to create a character that exhibits lady-like qualities whether or not they are actually a noble. Unfortunately this isn’t always easy.

Not everyone has been exposed to lady-like behaviour in a personal enough way to understand it. If you have been exposed to a woman who is lady-like then you still may not understand the guidelines or rules that allow you to be lady-like as well.

Some character concepts that may benefit from being lady like are (in my opinion) any Tolkien or ‘high’ elf, any female noble, an aristocrat, a woman of rank or station, or any character that is portrayed as lady-like. An example of a character that is lady-like but not a noble would be Anna from ‘Anna and the King’ or perhaps Arwen from the Lord of the Rings.

I invite you to ask any questions that you have about being a Lady or lady-like in the following weeks. If you feel that you have what it takes to play a lady-like character in a LARP then I would love to hear it! Use the link to the left and give your insights so that I can better represent you.

All the best in your future LARP endeavours,
