Someone in the infamous band “Nirvana” (either Dave Grohl or Kurt Cobain) once said that they knew that they had ‘made it big’ when Wielrd Al Yankovic called them to ask if he could create a parody of one of their songs.
I wonder if that’s what the community of live action role players feel when they realize that HBO has tipped the hat to this hobby turned obsession. The 5th Season of HBO’s “Weeds” airs an episode by the name of “Van Nuys” in which Andy experiences a hollywood version of a “LARP date” only to take it all the way as he is inspired on by a $100K account left by his brother. I think.
Slashfilm.com wrote a review about the episode in which it briefly mentions the LARP date and the ensuing aftermath.
For those LARP participants with their ear to the ground it’s not hard to see that LARP is picking up speed and seeping into the mainstream. Is this tip of the hat a proud moment for the hobby?
I leave that for you to decide.
All the best to your future LARP endeavours,
Kevin Tjia
