As a rule I try to keep my head up when LARP is the discussion of the moment and it came to no surprise to me when I was recently told that some ‘crazy Russians’ were sporting some incredibly good costumes to immerse themselves into a LARP with “Fallout” – the game – as their muse.
What did surprise me and put a smile on my face was the conditions in which they facilitate their live action role playing desires. This ‘Californian bunker’ – true to the game setting – is awesome! While many LARPs attempt to recreate a castle, the royal chambers, futuristic skyscrapers, or techno-guns these players have taken a more realistic, gritty, dirt in your teeth kind of approach and I applaud them for it.
With these guys it’s not just the bunkers and dank crawl spaces that give the game a realistic look. Some of the costumes that they have recreated based on the game are the kind of quality that would give a Cosplay fanatic star spangled eyes.
After taking a look at some of the other pictures I definitely think that this is something that could be duplicated here in North America – if we were so inclined. There are many old stone houses on forgotten 100+ acre lots with bunker style foundations exposed, or all that remains is a hollowed out shell but rarely is there an old stone and mortar town complete with wartime scarring.
Unfortunately for us we seem to differentiate between Cosplay and LARP – even though the similarities between the two allow them to be almost symmetrical (in my opinion). The Europeans don’t seem to recognize a difference and they have fantastic live action role playing games filled with costumes that boggle the mind as a result.
