Key Elements to Standing Out In a Crowd

Posted by KTjia On March - 31 - 2009

There are several rules on how to act like a lady or gentleman and in this first instalment we are going to discuss three things which will help you master key elements that allow these noble characters to stand out in a crowd.

Some of these tips may seem like common sense and many of us are taught these principals as we grow up but you would be surprised how many people do not take the time to master these concepts. If you do not pay these principals special attention, as a lady or gentleman should, then you simply can’t compare with someone who does.

Cleanliness is Key. If you can shower on a regular basis then I suggest that you do so. If showering isn’t possible then at least ensure that you are prepared to keep your hands and face clean no matter where you are playing your LARP.

Your character will stand out as ‘pristine’ when everyone else has a fine layer of grime and dirt but your hands and face (the most common uncovered areas) are fresh and clean.

Dress the Part. This does not mean that you have to wear a lavish gown or ‘dress’ clothing. A lady of refinement is known to be thoughtful in all that they do and this includes the simplest thing such as getting dressed.

Having a set of coordinated clothing that matches goes a long way to showing that you came prepared. You also want to ensure that you don’t undermine your carefully thought out costume by showing up with your costume wrinkled and mashed. Wrinkles will make anyone look dishevelled.

Another key element to dressing the part is dressing appropriately for your body type. Even the most elegant looking matching costume is going to look less than lady-like if it doesn’t fit you properly or shows your body in an unflattering way.

Ensure your makeup is flawless. Believe it or not something that I learned from working at a cosmetics counter for over two years is that many women are never taught to do their makeup properly.

Visit your local department store or makeup boutique and discuss ways for you to apply your makeup and achieve a ‘natural glow.’ You may be surprised at what they show you. Plus, in many department stores they will do a make-over for free to show you the product.

The expression ‘fair lady’ was born from the attempt to describe the glow of a woman who had youthful skin which had not been blemished from too much sun. Well applied make-up can achieve a similar youthful and glowing look that is bound to stand out.

By using these three key rules you will we able to look the part of a lady no matter which character you decide to play. I caution you however that you may find your character (and possibly yourself) suddenly being courted by half the male characters in your game! Of course a lady would only rest on the arm of the finest gentleman….

All the best in your future LARP endeavours,

Kevin
